As i write this piece am utterly at lost as to where i should start from.is it the insensitivity of those in power or the apathy and feeling of hopelessness that characterizes the life of this country that has been endowed with all the known resources and potentials but appears to be one of the most backward nations of the world. Those elected to serve the people constitute less than 1 % of the population yet they consume over 50 % of the national budget.Imagine that just 4 years after paying our so called external debt which was squandered by a few individuals in government and their cronies on fictitious projects we are back to the debt circle again with a debt profile of over 4.5 billion dollars as at dec 2009 and the President is still requesting the National assembly to approve another loan of $5 billion to enable him finance critical infrastructure whatever that means.he is only looking for money to fund his election campaign which has now become the easiest way to making money, if you are in doubt arrange a non exiting group and URGE or BEG the president to contest and you will see funding coming from everywhere;as at last count over 2000 of such groups under different names are reaping from the project.(critical infrastructure indeed). our foreign reserve which stood at about $20 billion as @ 2007 has been depleted to less than a billion now no thanks to the monthly sharing by the 3 tiers of government to appease political interest .
In a country where 80% of the population lives in abject poverty the government has gone ahead to approve the purchase of 3 airplanes at the cost of $150 million which translates to N25 billion. these planes are for the presidential air fleet which already has six planes thereby bringing the total to 9 planes which is expected to serve less than 200 citizens, i doubt much if their is any commercial airline in the country that has this much airplanes in its fleet and this airliners are suppose to be serving over 150 million people.
security of lives and property are not the concern of the government as people are dying daily because of bad roads, incessant strikes by different workers especially MEDICAL WORKERS,outbreak of diseases like cholera(imagine) in the 21st century, religious and politically motivated upheavals, police brutality and toll collection (ROGER OF N20),e.t.c
The policies of government are characterized with deceit and ncertainty as government officials come out to make contradictory statements, the much publicised wage increase has turned out to be an illusion rather than a reality two months after it was supposed to have commenced.
