Have you ever had a discussion with an average Nigerian bothering on how things are suppose to be moving in the country?  The response you will get when you suggest that street lights are meant to line ALL roads like the lagos- Ibadan -Benin -Ore road is that the listener will view you as insane, The psyche of Nigerians has been so basterdized by bad leadership that what other societies take for granted we see as an impossibility.
What will it take for the citizens to realise that yes roads can exist without potholes? Or that its actually possible for water to be running from taps without boreholes and pumping machines? The answer lies in qualitative education which countless governments have over the years denied the people in other to keep them in bondage.
The united Nations has stipulated that at least 26% of total spending of governments should be invested in educating its citizens because anybody who attains quality education will be an asset to the society because he/she has the potential of doing great things. In societies where education receives the necessary priority it requires, you will find out that poverty has no place in such society. An educated person(in the real sense) understands the need to maintain a healthy life style by keeping his/her environment clean and tidy. Since 90% of germs thrive in unkept environment it behoves logic that people living in clean environment hardly fall sick.
Our education system (especially in the university )is modelled in a way that people go to school and get to read three or four pages of a course(handouts) in a semester after which they are asked to answer 3 questions out of 5 at the end of the semester. Once you answer two of the questions correctly it is assumed that you have passed such a course and you proceed to the next course. Herein lies one of the reasons why we have mechanical engineers who don’t know what a spanner looks like or a computer scientist who does not know the components of a computer.  It is little wonder that fifty two years after independence we have not invented anything and we still rely on foreign imports for our basic needs like clothing and food, infact the situation is so appalling that we import tooth picks.
For us to attain any meaningful development, there is a need to overhaul the entire educational curriculum to inculcate the needs of a developing nation like ours, laws should be put in place to ensure that funding for education is in line with UNESCO template and subjects which will develop cultural and ethical morals like civic responsibility should take the front burner instead of using outdated texts and materials in the name of handouts. Research should be given priority instead of the present copy copy system where undergraduates reproduce past research topics from other institutions in the name of project. Talent development should also be an integral part of the educational system instead of the present craze to acquire certificates and titles.
