I had chosen not to write articles of recent not because of lack of sociopolitical issues to write about but because I felt that there were so many writers out there especially on the social media; My believe was that more action and less talk is needed in the quest for making Nigeria a better society but then, the actions to be embarked upon must be carried out in an enlightened manner because evil thrives when people of good will do nothing. To write is better than doing nothing
In Nigeria just when you think we have reached our lowest point as a nation, our leaders take us to a new low. How does one comprehend the story of a football match were 67 goals were scored within 90 mintues an average of one goal in every twenty seconds,I doubt if basketball matches where scores are counted by 2 points can beat that. It was too good to be true and it was simply
not true. Plateau United Feeders’ utter
annihilation of Akurba FC and Police Machine
FC’s equally amazing 67-0 victory over
Bubayaro FC in their respective play-off
matches was a shocking display of stupidity in
criminal activity. The two victors had previously
played two rounds of matches in the
competition and were deadlocked on points,
goals, and advantages so this last round of
matches was crunch time for them. As at half-
time, Plateau United were 7 nil up and Police
Machine 6 nil up and it can only be imagined
the kind of comedy that would have been
involved in scoring 72 and 61 goals respectively
in just 45 minutes!
We now even boast of having the most expensive road in the world (Lagos-Ibadan expreway) which is expected to cost N167 billion naira, an everage of N1.3 billion per kilometer.
The
re occurrence of strikes by the Academic senior staff union of Nigerian universities ASSU and other labour unions in the education sector is a sad chapter in our educational development which is supposed to be the bedrock of any serious developmental strategy to better the lives of impoverished Nigerians who constitute the bulk f the citizenry. I believe that the demands by ASSU is realistic and implementable. The rot in the university system is visible for all to see, and comprehensive needs assessment has been carried out and presented to the government which agreed to implement the findings thereby entering into an agreement with ASSU in 2009. Some parts of the agreement s have been implemented but the key issues like emergency funding assistance which will have improved the educational system have not been implemented.
The shameful political thuggery which engulfed the Rivers State House of Assembly has shown how myopic our politicians can be. The entire saga is centered on personal interest and has nothing to do with principles or the need to serve people. The ruling party which takes prides in its slogan “the largest party in Africa” has show n that they are bereft of ideas of governance which will solve the bulk of our problems. Since they came into power 14 years ago what we see is at best a comical display of love for corruption and triviality. When they are not busy rigging elections, they dish out policies which are anti people in the name of reforms. I stand to be corrcted but apart from the Abuja stadium I doubt if there is any completed project which can be said with a cost of 10 bn Naira. If that is the case, what happened to the trillions of Naira spent by Government?
