Abdulkadir Ibrahim (IkonAllah)
Duke of Damare

Journalist | Crisis Communicator | Public Affairs Specialist | Mandela Washington Fellow

Profile

Abdulkadir Ibrahim, widely known by his pen name IkonAllah and the traditional title Duke of Damare, is a Nigerian journalist, crisis communicator, and public affairs specialist with over two decades of experience spanning emergency management, media, governance, and socioeconomic commentary. Born on September 15, 1980, in Kaduna, he hails from Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State. He currently serves as the Chief Information Officer of New Media at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Headquarters in Abuja, where he brings a rare combination of field experience, journalistic training, and strategic communication expertise to one of Nigeria’s most critical public institutions.

Education & Early Formation

Abdul received his early education at Police Children School Yola and went on to complete his secondary schooling at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Abeokuta. In 1998, he enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he trained until 2000. The return to civilian democratic governance in 1999 inspired a shift in his vision — he left the military to pursue a career in public service and governance. He subsequently earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Maiduguri in 2004, a formative period during which he also engaged actively in student unionism, building the foundations for a lifelong commitment to civic participation. He complemented his academic training with a computing diploma, recognising early on the transformative potential of information technology. In 2011, he enrolled in a Diploma in Journalism at the FRCN School of Journalism, Lagos, formalising his growing interest in media and public communication. He is also an alumnus of the Man O’ War Leadership Training School, Jos, and the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (Operation Haske Biyu, 2023).

Career

Abdul began his career in public service as an Economics teacher at Government Day Secondary School Gwadabawa, Yola North. He subsequently joined the Adamawa State Board of Internal Revenue (ADBIR) as an Inspector of Taxes, rising to become the pioneer Head of the ADBIR Lagos Tax Office. In 2009, he was recruited into the Federal Civil Service under The Presidency as a Search and Rescue Officer with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). This marked the beginning of a distinguished career with the agency that has spanned more than fifteen years.
In 2011, he was appointed as the Acting Media and Information Officer for NEMA’s South West Zone, a role that deepened his engagement with journalism and public communication. He was formally appointed Media and Information Officer for the NEMA North East Zone in 2012, a posting he held through 2022 — a period that coincided with some of the most complex humanitarian crises in Nigeria’s recent history, including the Boko Haram insurgency and its devastating displacement effects across the Lake Chad Basin. His crisis communication work during this period earned him wide recognition as a skilled and empathetic spokesperson in the most challenging of circumstances. He currently serves as Chief Information Officer, New Media, at NEMA’s national headquarters in Abuja.

Civic Leadership & Recognition

In 2007, Abdul contested for the Yola South constituency seat in the Adamawa State House of Assembly under the ANPP, demonstrating an early commitment to political participation and democratic governance. In 2016, he was honoured with the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders — one of the most competitive leadership development programmes on the continent, sponsored by the United States government. He is also the founder of the IkonAllah Consensus Foundation (ICF), a civic organisation committed to dialogue, reconciliation, and community development.

Publishing & Commentary

Abdul is the author and publisher of IkonAllah’s Chronicles (ikonallah.com), an independent online platform offering news analysis, political commentary, and socioeconomic discourse with a focus on Nigerian and African affairs. Running consistently since 2012, the platform reflects his deep commitment to informed public debate, accountable governance, and the power of independent journalism. His writing spans topics from electoral reform and security to humanitarian reconstruction and economic policy.

Professional Affiliations & Expertise

Abdul holds membership in the Institute of Emergency Management and the Institute of Operational Research. His areas of technical expertise include crisis communication, conflict reporting, paramedics and trauma life support, chopper rescue operations, project management, Quantum GIS, and humanitarian information management. He has participated in numerous national and international seminars and workshops on emergency response and public communication.

Personal

Abdul comes from a distinguished lineage — his paternal grandfather served as a District Officer in Mambilla Province in the 1940s, and his maternal grandfather, Alhaji Bello Hammanyero, was a renowned pastoralist and cattle trader from Mayo Belwa LGA, Adamawa State. He is the second of nine siblings, born to Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu and Hajiya Hassana Ibrahim. He married Mrs. Faiza Abdulkadir in April 2014, and they are blessed with two children: Yushau Ramadan (the Marquess of Damare, born June 26, 2015) and Bilkisu Khairan (born May 9, 2019). Outside of his professional life, Abdul enjoys horse riding, reading, travelling, music, and golf.
