It is unbelievable that after 11 years of insurgency and counter insurgency operations which led to several declarations of technical defeat of BokoHaram or ISWAP by the Nigerian Government the group seems to have had a resurgence with fierce brutality in recent days.
A dreadful video appeared where a boy who seems less than 10 years old was seen executing a kidnapped citizen with such brutality. The victim, Dalep was a student of University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID). A native of Jing in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau, he was abducted two weeks ago by insurgents on his way to Maiduguri to resume school along Maiduguri Damaturu federal highway. He was murdered a few days before the execution of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairman in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Rev. Lawan Andimi. Andimi was abducted by Boko Haram when they attacked Michika early January 2
If after 11 years these insurgents are still this potent and daring then its clear that Government needs to re access its present strategy divorced from political interference. For effective security across the country There’s the need to standardise our checkpoints by having a single design at specific points ie two in each senatorial district making 218 check points or two in each local Government area making a total of 1488 check points all inter connected with high tech security systems for surveillance and intelligence gathering . All security agencies will have at least five officer at each point for seamless collaboration and rapid response. We cannot continue doing the same thing and expect different results.
The president needs to step up to get the real picture of the situation. Drones should be acquired( instead of an ill advised renovation of National Assembly Complex at an outrageous amount of N37bn). He also needs to show more empathy to the plight of victims by offering symbolic presence by visiting victims and communities affected by the resurgence instead of staying back in London over an Economic summit that can be handled by the minister of foreign affairs. Yes, some serious gains were made in improving the security situation but it seems of recent THINGS ARE FALLING APART.
