I can vividly recall the 50th anniversary bomb blast which claimed the life of a very good friend of mine Tahir Biu. As I watched the news strip flashing the story on tv I told the person watching with me that this bombing will open a flood gate of other bombings because Nigerians have a penchant for over doing things.
Up until 2009, we believed that Nigerians could do anything but kill each other using bombs. Regrettably though, that is not the case today. Nigerians have since then been tormented by terrorists who have made killing their major occupation. When Farouk Muttallab was caught trying to blow up a plane in America and the American government declared Nigeria a terrorists enclave, we all protested saying it was not in our culture, the last two years have proved us wrong with the reality of terrorism becoming a daily occurance.
The first case of suicide bombing was recorded when Louis Edet house the location of the headquarters of the Nigerian police was bombed but even after that attack the government still claimed that it was not a suicide bombing attack.
For me the most baffling aspect of this terrorists attacks is that not even a single person has been held responsible. In the last two years over 20 of such bomb attacks have taken place, arrest have been made yet no headway has been made in the efforts to stop these needless killings. Is it that those arrested have not given out information? Are they not guilty? If yes why have they not been convicted? If no, then who is responsible?
With over one trillion naira set aside for security in the 2012 budget (a whopping 3 billion naira daily) the situation keeps getting worse. The national security adviser has blamed the bombings on the divisive politics practiced by the ruling party in the runoff of the 2011 elections. Infact Mr president himself said he knows those responsible and that they have even infiltrated his government. The question to ask is why has the government not deemed it fit to arrest the suspects to acertain their culpability?.
At a certain point in time the security operatives promised to expose the sponsors of these terrorists acts but till date not even a single person has been prosecuted. Anytime I hear of a new bomb blast I silently pray that it will not be true time and time again I get to be proved wrong.
If the present trend of bombing churches every Sunday continues then in the near future a religious war will break out and then the tragedy that will follow can only be imagined. In the interest of all the government must ensure that something is done to avert such a scenario
